Clarus Description

Established in 2004, the Clarus Initiative is a federal effort to model a data system integrating  highway surface weather information aimed at a broad range of critical transportation needs, including road maintenance, traffic management, traveler information dissemination, emergency vehicle dispatching, and public safety. The Clarus system includes ingestion of states’ Environmental Sensor Station (ESS) data with standardized communication from other entities (state DOTs, private developers and researchers) with plans to incentivize and integrate new technologies into a system to meet the needs of a broad range of stakeholders.
